Tritex NDT Announce Partnership Agreement with STR

Tritex NDT is pleased to announce a rental partnership agreement with Subsea Technology and Rentals (STR), a multi-disciplinary technology expert.

An array of Tritex NDT specialist diver and ROV equipment will now be available to hire or purchase through STR’s Head Office in Great Yarmouth, including The Multigauge 4100 and 4400 Underwater Thickness Gauges.

The Multigauge 4100 and 4400 are simple, robust ultrasonic thickness gauges designed to be mounted onto all types of work class ROV’s. There are two models in the range, the Multigauge 4100 which has a depth rating of 3280 feet and the Multigauge 4400 which has a depth rating of 13,123 feet. Both gauges have been designed and built to survive extremely harsh conditions that exist in the offshore and underwater industries worldwide. The gauges use multiple echo which means measurements can be easily taken without the need to remove coatings, up to 0.25”, and the RS422 output makes connection to most ROV’s simple.

Neil Jackson, Sales and Operations Manager at STR, said: “This agreement can only enhance our ability to provide advance technology fast. STR are keen to develop partnerships with manufacturers capable of offering the highest level of products, service and knowledge to benefit our customers across the globe.”

The tanker RFA Darkdale was sunk by a German U-boat and was the first British ship sunk south of the equator. She was hit with four torpedoes whilst at anchor off Jamestown, St Helena in October 1941.  As she lay in 40 metres depth, her hull is starting to show signs of leaking oil into James Bay.

A team of 9 people from the Ministry of Defence DE&S Salvage and Marine Operations (SANMO) were deployed to St Helena in April to investigate the exact condition of the ship and to ascertain whether RFA Darkdale is likely to become an environmental hazard to the island.

Part of the survey involved using a Tritex Multigauge 4100 ROV mountable thickness gauge mounted onto a Seaeye Falcon ROV. The gauge was used to inspect the corrosion levels and determine the amount of wastage that has occurred in the hull and whether there is any risk of the hull leaking any more oil.

Following the investigation, Mr Andy Liddell, one of the team members, said, “The gauge worked and we got readings off the hull, I have to admit to being surprised given the corroded state of the hull.”

New probe holder for ROV gauges

Tritex NDT have developed a new probe holder for use with the Multigauge 4000 series ROV gauges. The ingenious design means that measurements can be taken at all angles, in any direction, with no moving parts which can get clogged with silt and seaweed. The new probe holder is made from Titanium for strength and lightness. The new simple and robust design was accepted with lots of enthusiasm at the recent Oceanology exhibition.
