Road tankers corrode and erode from the inside out, and regular inspections are required to prevent accidents from happening. It is usual to measure the top, bottom and sides of the tank, as well as the knuckle ends, to identify areas of thinning before accidents occur.

Inspections are normally carried out by road tanker refurbishment companies, inspection companies and also in house by large haulage companies.

As well as ignoring coatings, Tritex multigauges will also measure through decals stuck on the outside metal surface of the road tanker.
